Another “Only in Michigan” Story

buick dealerAs the first line of this story states, police usually recover stolen property, they don’t sell it.

But that’s exactly what happened in Flint, Michigan earlier this month. A Mt. Morris Township man attended a police auction hoping to get a great deal on a car. That’s exactly what he got. He purchased a Buick Regal for less than $4,000. That’s a steal! (Pun intended)

Everything was going just fine for the first few days. But then the original owner of the vehicle noticed it being repaired in a garage. That wouldn’t have been a problem if said original owner did not recognize it as the car she reported stolen some time ago. When all the investigations were over, police realized that the papers for this stolen vehicle got mixed up with another, non-stolen vehicle’s papers.

Luckily, the police department is going to give this unidentified man his money back and any expenses he incurred during his three-day ownership. As long as he has receipts for the expenses, the Flint Police Department is happy to remedy the situation.

I’m from Flint, Michigan. Because of that fact, this story undoubtedly caught my eye. I could tell you some stories of things I’ve seen during my 29 years there, including the time we were at a popular local greasy spoon and my friend asked the waitress what kind of soup they had for the day. She went back to the kitchen and returned to our table and said, “Our soup of the day is Campbell’s.”

Now back to the topic. Don’t risk buying a stolen vehicle. Visit your local Buick dealer and get a new or certified pre-owned car that isn’t “hot.” Paying a few extra bucks for peace of mind is definitely worth the price.
