The National Insurance Crime Bureau is working on a new website where you can check your car’s repair history. The website is going to include a huge database of vehicles that have either been stolen or “totaled,” as declared by the insurance company. Drivers only need to enter their car’s VIN to look up its history.
The crime bureau is actually an organization funded by more than 1,000 of the nation’s insurers. That’s why the NICB can offer it to the public absolutely free.
The service is needed more and more each day, too. In the last five years, insurance companies have declared more than 12 million vehicles “totaled.” Most of these are the results of collisions, but many include fire and floods, too. About 30 percent of these vehicles go back on dealer lots to be sold without the customer’s knowledge. In California, about seven percent of used cars have been totaled by insurance companies.
The online service is slated to become operational at the end of June. When the website goes live, you can view it at NICB.org.
