If you’ve ever wanted a diesel-powered Nissan Maxima, your wait is almost over. Last week, the Japanese automaker announced that it was bringing your wish to the United States market in 2010. The announcement also said that Nissan is releasing a diesel SUV in Japan this year. The announcement makes this the first Japanese company to release a diesel engine in the United States.
Diesel engines haven’t been very popular in the North American market. The main reason for that is because of the diesel’s reputation. Most Americans think of words like “dirty,” “gas-guzzling” and “loud” when they hear the word diesel. That’s why Nissan has its work cut out when it introduces those engines to its North American lots in two years.
Nissan’s enthusiasm to release the cleaner diesel engines in its Maxima brand and SUVs is part of the automaker’s “Green 2010″ plan. This was a program unveiled in December 2006 that shows Nissan’s dedication to turning out more green vehicles and to continue looking for more eco-friendly ways to create those vehicles. The plan includes a great deal of research in addition to developing more hybrids and electric vehicles for the worldwide market.
If you can’t wait until 2010, your local Nissan dealer still has several new and used fuel-efficient vehicles that you can choose from. You might even want to take one home today!
