The researchers at Popular Mechanics recently took the new 2009 Nissan Maxima for a test drive. When they saw it at the New York Auto Show earlier this year, they were instantly drawn in. Here are some things they noticed after taking it for a spin.
• Nissan’s next-generation 3-mode Xtronic CVT helps improve the car’s gas mileage and acceleration from a spotlight. To put it in their words, the car “surges away from the traffic with a musical snarl, albeit one that maintains a constant pitch rather than a crescendo.”
• The 2009 Maxima is reasonably-priced at about $32,000 for one with several features.
• This version of the Maxima has tighter handling and steering than previous models. “The steering is direct, accurate and nicely weighted,” according to the researcher’s report. The report went on to say that the Maxima “steers with real precision.”
