Throughout the years, the donor’s donations have enabled Wisconsin’s food banks to pass out more than 11 million pounds of food to pantries, shelters and other food programs. Since 1983, the donor has given more than $2 million to the food banks in the state. This year’s $75,000 donation enable the food banks to distribute about a half million pounds of food.

Although the president of the organization – Bonnie Bellehumeur – has never met the secret donor, she is grateful for the donations. And with the flailing economy, those donations are even more helpful than they have ever been. Food supplies are also low and the demand has gone up nearly 25 percent.

The benefit concert occurred Monday night at the Count Basie Theater. Jon Bon Jovi was the headlining performer along with Southside Johnny Lyon. This was the fourth annual Hope Concert. It raised more than $250,000 for the Parker Family Health Center. In addition to that, people brought thousands of kilograms of food for local food banks and services.

The new hotline – 1(866)4SAFE-NJ – is designed to take phone calls related to any suspicious activity that could be gearing up for terrorism. So far, the agency has been spreading awareness throughout the state by putting up posters and passing out flyers that read, “Our Most Effective Weapon Against Terrorism Is You. If You Suspect It, Report It.” Many of these ads are in places of businesses, police stations and other public facilities where many people will see them. New Jersey also has similar messages on the electronic billboards along the highway.

In addition to the hotline, you can also email any suspicious activity to tips@njhomelandsecurity.gov.

The newest attempt to accomplish this goal was the nation’s “second Internet auction that will charge power plants money to compensate” for the pollution they create. The RGGI, or Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, organized the auction which included 10 northeastern states that have promised to reduce their emissions by at least 10 percent in the next 10 years. (All those 10s do not have any significance in the plan, it just turned out that way.)

The auction occurred yesterday and it sold more than 30 million carbon dioxide allowances. Bidders included Conectiv Energy and other plants in and around New Jersey. The proceeds will be divided between each state’s Economic Development Authority, the DEP and the Board of Public Utilities.

In response to this, automakers like Nissan are going to combine the launch of the electric car with “a big dose of community outreach, with the hope of making the new generation of vehicles more desirable and convenient to consumers.”

One thing Nissan is considering is a battery swapping program. This should solve the problem of electric cars having a limited range because there would be “swapping stations” all over the country where drivers could switch batteries quickly and keep moving along on their trip.
